John Whelan has been involved in the fitness industry since 1985 when he first started martial arts. Immediately John fell in love with the sport and soon found himself training for hours a day. All this training paid off in 1988 when he won first place at Karatemania Competition in Kitchener, ON which involved competitors from all over Canada and the United States. After placing so well, John decided to move to Toronto in 1989 to pursue a career in Kick-boxing with the Twin Dragons Kung Fu Club. Realizing that amateur Kick-boxing did not pay very well, John went to work for Fitness Connection in Don Mills,ON to help support himself. It was there that he realized he had found his true calling as a fitness instructor.

In order to further his education in the fitness field, John moved to Calgary, AB in 1992 and was certified as a Basic Fitness Leader by the Alberta Fitness Leadership Certification Association. In further search of knowledge John decided to return to Newfoundland in 1993 to attend Memorial University. John immediately enrolled in the Physical Education Program and it was during his studies that he acquired the necessary information and influences to become involved in Bodybuilding.

The Work-terms for the Physical Education program found John working at various fitness centers throughout the province but it was at New World Fitness that John acquired a full time position as Head Fitness Trainer. In the years to follow John became heavily involved with the sport of Bodybuilding and competed in every Provincial Championship from 1995-2004 with the exception of 1999 where he volunteered to help run the show.

Prior to receiving his Degree in Physical Education, John was named to The School of Physical Education and Athletics Director's Academic List in recognition of high academic achievement, recognizing him as being in the top 5% of the school. Also in 1999, John was certified by the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (C.S.E.P.) as a Certified Fitness Consultant as well as a Professional Fitness and Lifestyle Consultant. Upon completion of his degree John went to work for New World Fitness for a couple of years before starting his own personal training company in June, 2000 namely Complete Fitness and Nutrition.
